The Sleeping Giant is an iconic landmark in Thunder Bay, ON Canada and it was up for one of the 7 Wonders of the World competition. It is set in the remote Northwestern Ontario wilderness hundreds of miles from the next large city center. It graces the harbour with its beauty and wonderment and can be seen from many points of the city. It draws in tourists from all over the world with its views and beautiful hiking trails and camping. It has become a favourite to many painters from the area.
Its folklore is based on the Sioux Tribe infiltrating the Ojibwa tribe in order to discover the location of the silver mine at Silver Islet that was protected by the God Nanabijou, Spirit of the Deep Sea Water. Because of that deceit, the Chief was turned to stone and rests at the opening of the Thunder Bay Harbour to this day.
